Edexcel ALevel Politics
Lesson to compare Congress and Parliament (actually about 2 hours work plus hwk). Does not require textbooks or any additional resources but secure knowledge is important however if you have used my lessons preceding this one, you will have all the knowledge you need!
Includes all of the info- but knowledge/ understanding will be important in case of student questions.
Includes discussion task, comparative highlighting tasks and analysis tasks,
Edexcel ALevel Politics spec but can be used for AQA as very similar.
Lesson examining and analysing compartive Politics looking at various aspects of USA President and UK Prime Ministers including:
-Role and Powers
-Cabinets
-Accountability to Legislatures/ Checks and balances
-Styles of Government
-RElationships between branches
Also includes updated examples as of January 2024 including James Cleverly controversies and attempts to impeach Biden in US House due to increasing partisanship
Includes little video clips to demonstrate examples or show comparisons and a full breakdown of the comparative theories for this topic.
Includes a colour code to help students get used to understanding the different theories and how to apply them.
Very detailed and no need for any additional resources although can be set as independent work with textbook but all info is contained within resources so no need to own the Bennett book- if you don’t have it ignore page references in the teacher notes.
This lesson has a lot of resources, more than enough for 2 hours of lessons (probably 3 hours if you include video tasks) plus homework and there is a 12 mark exam question for Edexcel included.
Edexcel ALevel Politics Component 3 USA Politics Comparative
Topic 4 Supreme Court and Civil Rights
This is my Introduction lesson to the Court and key terms e.g. Stare Decisis, Loose/ Strict Constructivism and Originalism.
Includes a key profile of the current court for a research homework and how they ruled on key cases e.g. Dobbs v Jackson Women’s Board of Health and New York state rifle assoc. v Bruen which cover key aspects of the divisive issues in the USA today e.g. abortion rights, gun control, voting rights, immigration and campaign finance.
All the SCOTUS cases I cover are useful case studies for other topics due to the synoptic nature of the ALevel course, this helps students to join the dots.

Edexcel Government and Politics ALevel lesson 1 Intro and Democracy
First lesson in the Democracy topic for the Edexcel board but could be used for AQA and OCR too. Includes powerpoint, work sheets and other resources needed for outstanding teaching. Lesson is approx 2 hours plus homework.

Lesson 1 Introduction to USA Politics to start Year 13 course in Comparative Politics.
1 hour lesson which will cover all the basics of US Politics- Part of my 2 lesson intro to USA- Part 2 is US Historical context.
Designed for Edexcel spec but can be adapted for AQA.
Could also be used for other areas e.g. context for English Literature, Social Studies, Sociology etc.
Lesson for Edexcel Politics ALevel
Introduction and Overview to Feminism lessons- this is a double lesson plus note making for homework on Feminism and its development over time.
Begins with looking at issues facing women in the 21st century e.g. female genital mutilation, rape and sexual assault, gender pay gap, violence against women and girls etc- students discuss and swap articles and then the lesson develops from there.
Introduces some of the key thinkers e.g. Perkins-Gillman, Wollstonecraft and Friedan as well as Bell Hooks.
Lesson examining Political Participation in the UK and the changes to rates of voting in elections, referendums and membership of parties and pressure groups.
Includes full powerpoint resource, evidence sheet with stats up to date as of 2022/ 2023.

This mega 2 hour lesson plus hwk examines how powerful the POTUS in the USA is for the key debate to end Topic 3
Includes retrieval of past knowledge re: President, note taking and discussion about unilateral actions of POTUS and limitations of these. Discussion/ ranking task of factors which can hinder/ help a POTUS achieve aims and a debate/ table of arguments about how imperial a President is alongside the discussion of whether a President may be described as Bifurcated.
Also includes a colour code sheet for homework and a comparative task to prepare them for thinking about comparison to Prime Minister.

I have not included AV 2011 but this would also be a good one to look at as it gave govt a mandate to reject electoral reform but 2015 brought fresh demands to reform after most disproportionate election results.

Introduction to Congress and its structure and powers
Fully comprehensive lesson (2 hours) which includes all necessary resources
Includes up to date case studies relevant to all powers of Congress.
This lesson has been planned using the 2021 Bennett textbook so all information has come from this source.
Includes a starter looking at popular perceptions of Congress and discussion task around reasons for this.
Card sort matching examples and descriptions of Congressional powers- sorting Exclusive from Concurrent powers of Congress.

Topic 1 Democracy Case Studies for key debates: Representative vs Direct Democracy, How far is there a participation crisis? Should there be further attempts to expand franchise? How far is UK Elitist/ Pluralist? Prisoner Voting Rights Debate, How well have rights been protected?
Topic 2 Political Parties Case Studies for key debates: How far do political parties support democracy in UK? Should political parties be state funded? How far has the Conservative Party identified with One Nation Principles? How far has Labour remained true to traditional principles? How significant are minor/ small parties in UK?

This lesson is for the Component 1 teaching of Democracy. It examines the development of suffrage in the UK and milestones which led to this and examines more recent debates about the growth of suffrage e.g. Votes for 16 and the voting rights for prisoners.
If you can get hold of a copy of Blackadder III Dish and Dishonesty it is well worth it- so funny for the state of Democracy in the 19th Century but it is not essential for this lesson. Obviously I cannot share this for copyright reasons.
All other resources are included.
